What are side effects?
No significant side effects have been reported in the numerous double-blind studies. In a large-scale safety study involving 3,250 patients conducted in Germany, undesirable side effects were reported in 79 patients. (2.4 percent). The most frequently noted side effects were gastro-intestinal irritation (0.5 percent), allergic reactions (0.5 percent), fatigue (0.4 percent), and restlessness (0.3 percent).

What are the contraindications?
As with other drugs, use of SENTICARE® (St. John’s Wort) during pregnancy and lactation should only be considered if the benefits outweigh any possible side effects.

What are the drug interactions?
St. John’s Wort appears to affect enzymes in liver & gut that metabolize certain drugs, including cyclosporine, digoxin, indinavir, oral contraceptives, theophylline, tricyclic antidepressants such as amitriptyline, and anticoagulants such s warfarin (Coumadin). SENTICARE® (St. John’s Wort) may potentiate prescription antidepressant and antianxiety drugs. There is one case report of simultaneous use of St. John’s Wort and paroxetine producing nausea, fatigue, lethargy, and weakness.
